Helen Sung graced our church with her wonderful piano music. She was joined by Donald Edwards on drums, Chris Allen on sax and Boris Kozlov on bass. Her playing and interpretations are truly remarkable. We had about 70 people present from our church, neighborhood and fans of Helen Sung. She played original compositions, spiritual songs and interpretations of Jazz Standards. The audience was very responsive and enjoyed the band’s performance. The Service was spiritual and brought in many who would not normally attend church. Luca Rosenfeld and his girlfriend Sophie Yoon attended a service at the church for the first time even though Luca has attended pre-school, boy scouts and studied guitar with Jeanne DeYcaza. He felt that it was amazing that live jazz was seamlessly woven into the fabric of a service. He was attracted to the high quality of jazz presented and is looking forward to hearing Antoinette Montague in April.
Rosemarie Wedig ushered at the last few vespers and again for this service. Richard Falotico opened the church for the 2:00 o’clock rehearsal, to make sure the facility was in order.
Richard Corson attended and took photos. Rev. Bonnie Olson prepared the bulletin, welcoming and introductions from the pulpit and gave a brief 5 minute word.
Jack Quinn to provide the publicity needed through Facebook, local papers, the Church web site. Sunny Knable, the Church Music Director invited some of his students to attend, an entire family came as a result, and set up the sound and stands for the 2 PM rehearsal. Jeannie De Ycaza, Tom and Cindy Hogan served as decorators and ushers. Javier Reyes and Bill Gati put up the banner in front of the church steps. Kay Finch and the Flower and Chancel Committee provided flowers and Bill Gati presented them to Helen Sung before the Service. Bill Gati and Worship and Music Committee made sure that everything went smoothly, was the contact with the musicians, was there at 2:00 to let the band in, helped set everything up, paid the band, helped decorate and greeted people as they came in.
Invite all your friends, neighbors and relatives for the next Jazz Vespers on April 26, 2014 with Antoinette Montague. This will be a very special service.
